Show rank of countries and cities by number of places#54

This doesn’t need to be the default, just have it as an extra option to the Places section, similar to the existing “Latest Places/Most Popular”.

Hi! Can you send a link or a screenshot to the area of the site you’d like to see this option? For example, where is the “places section” you referred to?

Hey @Nicola, here’s a couple screenshots as requested. The section appears both at the top and bottom of the page. Top is desktop version, bottom the mobile one.

On the desktop version, what are marked as “Top Destinations” could be arranged by number of places rather than alphabetically. The current alphabetical order has the additional issue of cutting off at “Japan” on Countries.

Hey @linkogecko I see what you mean. Currently these top destinations aren’t generated automatically, so they’ve been the same for a long while now. United States is obviously a top destination in terms of number of places and now I think Sweden and Netherlands are up there too. We could look into updating these so they accurately reflect the top destinations as defined by number of places…

But I am curious, is it that you’d like to be able to see how many places are in each country more easily? Or more that you’d like to know the ranking of countries as defined by number of places in the Atlas?

Thanks for the response @Nicola, my preference with this suggestion would be to know the ranking of countries as defined by number of places in the Atlas.

You mentioned the US, which is the country with most Places by far. Yet, per the screenshot I posted the last time, the country doesn’t even show up on the header due to the alphabetical arrangement.

Changed the title from "List countries and cities by number of Places" to "Show rank of countries and cities by number of places"

Cool, thanks. Yeah the US is not included because those top 8 countries were selected manually – so it doesn’t have to do with the alphabetical order, the staff at the time just chose to exclude it.

If we redesign the navigation and/or the Destinations page (https://www.atlasobscura.com/destinations) we will definitely take this idea of ranking by number of place into consideration.

@linkogecko wanted to let you know that the Top Cities and Top Countries on the new homepage are now in order by # of places (unlike the list in the dropdown nav which is alphabetical order and hand-picked).

We will continue to experiment with adding the actual place count there and improving https://www.atlasobscura.com/destinations as well.
