There have been so many places Ive seen and travelled to see only to find that they are closed. I know it sometimes can be found in the details, but once the comment is put into the description that a place is closed or destroyed, it should have a red marker or outline on the map/list so it cant be seen immediately that it is not possible to visit.
On a similar note, it’d also be great to color code time-sensitive entries. For example, this entry is for a parade that only happens 1 day each year: https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/procession-of-the-species
Hi @K Malczewski thanks for the suggestion. We would love to improve communication of if a place is closed across the site. Can you share a screenshot or example of a closed place on the map or list? are you referring to the website or the iOS mobile app?
We want to improve interactions with places that are permanently closed. The feedback we’ve heard so far is:
Love this idea. It would be VERY helpful to have closed places appear in a different color. And same goes for time sensitive pins- like flags, carnivals, weekend only attractions, etc.
Thank you!
Hi everyone, we’ve released a couple small improvements for closed Places on the website including:
Next, we plan to improve the color-coding/icons of the pins on the Apple map, so you can tell which places are closed at a glance, so I will move this suggestion back to “Planned” status.
Further down the line, we’d love to implement bigger features like the ability to filter out Closed places on the map and in searches, but that is not something we’ve currently planned.
Not sure if this makes more sense here, or as its own separate suggestion, but I think that a distinction might be worth making between what has closed permanently, and Places that were always intended to be temporary.
I am looking at London’s guide for example, and we have the following:
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/psychobarn
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/george-michael-memorial-garden
Personally, I think it would make sense to outright delete these Places in order to declutter the guides. As temporary features, they are probably well-documented elsewhere on the internet, and they don’t offer information that would be super useful for current visitors.
